The main difference is in look and feel. Beech is strong, plain, and uniform, while oak has a more visible grain and a richer texture. Oak is generally more resistant to moisture and is often seen as the more premium option, while beech is widely available and easier to work with.
We recommend 12–15 holds for a good boulder line.
Granite is rougher and more coarse, while sandstone is smoother and less textured. Granite is a little harder on the skin, which makes it good for skin training, while sandstone is softer and can work well for longer or more frequent sessions. Both have strong friction and a very grippy feel.

We work with granite quarries in Norway and Finland, and sandstone from the Dolomites. The rock we use for our climbing holds is leftover material from road and tunnel construction, which we recycle instead of letting it go to waste. We work with responsible suppliers and do not damage climbing areas.

Not quickly. It takes years of climbing to polish our holds, and we have not seen that happen in our more than 10 years of production. Over time, though, they will naturally wear down, just like real rock.
Skin care
There are three simple ways to prepare your skin: use skin products, train with friction, and build skin through pressure. If you want the most climbing-specific option, training on stone holds is a great way to toughen your skin before a trip.
Real granite gives your skin the same friction and feel you experience outdoors. That makes it one of the best ways to prepare for climbing outside, because your skin gets used to real rock instead of just plastic holds.
The best choice depends on your skin type and condition. We’ve put together a simple guide to help you choose the right Rhino Skin product for your needs.
